Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Multiplayer Review:
Although I did not have the chance to play the single player campaign I can confirm that the new multiplayer mode is a solid offering. I’m a veteran of the first person shooter genre and this game could have easily turned into a “me too” FPS with the movie license tacked onto it. Fortunately this is not the case.
Each Transformer can of course transform into various types of land or air vehicles depending on the chosen faction. Whether you choose to be a member of the autobots or decepticons, the weapons feel balanced and the multiplayer aspect is generally a lag free afair.
Where the game really shines is in the strategy and fun in transforming in the right place and at the right times. Transforming is less of hassle than in the first game which now requires one push of a button.
I managed a bunch of local multiplayer matches with the guys at the office and everyone seemed to experience a cool moment where a missle locked onto their character, marking almost certain death, was evaded at the very last moment by transforming.
Generally speaking the levels, though not filled with an immense amount of detail, did seem to be layed out stategically to keep the flow of battle from getting too stagnant.
The graphics are nothing to write home about although the animation is definately a cut above average. You’ll notice some low resolution textures here or there but nothing too ugly or memorable.
I did find the missle lock on and overheating weapon aspect of the game could use a little bit of polish. But any deficiencies in these systems can be quickly and painlessly overcome with a little bit of playing time.
Overall the multiplayer aspects of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen does not disappoint and I recommed that any self respecting Transformers fan give this sequel a go. Forget that movie that it is based off of was a total train wreck and enjoy this game for what it is. I promise that you will not be disappointed.
