PS3rd place no more. PS3 Slim revealed.

Sony has just dropped the bomb at this years Gamecon or GC 09 for short. The Playstation 3 is now available at the right price to begin taking market share back from its rivals. The magic number is $299 and It will change the gaming landscape as we know it. In the weeks leading up to GC09 the existence of a Playstation 3 Slim was all but officially confirmed by several sources.
Today Kaz Hirai took to the stage to announce that the PS3 Slim would be available the week of September 1st and with a large 120 GB hard drive. The unit is also 32% smaller, 36% lighter and consumes 34% less power. Hot off the heals of the controversial and lambasting comments made by Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick in regard to the consoles high price point, it comes as no surprise that Sony would respond as quickly as possible. Hirai also noted that existing PS3 systems would be reduced to the new $299.00 price point effective tomorrow.
What makes this announcement so important is simply that the Playstation 3 is now cheap enough to compete with Microsoft and Nintendo during this all important holiday season. The slim evens the playing field for Sony. With an exclusives line up that reads like a who’s who in video game sequels such as Uncharted 2, Rachet and Clank: A Crack In Time, God of War 3 and Gran Turismo 5 coming down the pipeline, this console war just got a whole lot more interesting.
